SOFAR Xiaohang Brand Character Design

Brand overview

In the renewable energy industry, most brands still communicate primarily through technical specifications, engineering performance and system solutions.

That language is essential. But as solar PV and energy storage markets mature, product differences narrow and brand audiences expand beyond engineers and procurement teams, another question becomes increasingly important:

Can a technology brand be understood as more than a technical system?

During SOFAR’s broader brand renewal, the company introduced a more human answer: Xiaohang, a proprietary brand avatar designed to give the digital energy brand a recognizable personality and a more approachable communication interface.

SOFAR officially unveiled Xiaohang during its global brand renewal in January 2023. The company describes the character as lively, enterprising, honest and knowledgeable, embodying SOFAR’s spirit of integrity, exploration and consideration.

More importantly, Xiaohang represents the people behind the technology—from service engineers working on projects to R&D teams exploring new solutions and production employees safeguarding product quality. In this sense, the character is not simply a promotional mascot. It gives human form to the people, values and energy system behind SOFAR.

Developed by Xinming Design, the Xiaohang character system became part of SOFAR’s wider brand identity architecture and reflects an important Brand OS principle:

When technology becomes more complex, brands need clearer human interfaces.

SOFAR Xiaohang: Building a Human Interface for a Digital Energy Brand

Renewable energy is an industry built on systems.

Inverters.

Energy storage.

Power conversion.

Monitoring platforms.

Algorithms.

Safety architecture.

Grid interaction.

For engineers and professional buyers, this technical language is necessary.

But a global energy brand now communicates with a much wider group of people:

installers,
partners,
employees,
families,
investors,
communities,
media,
and future generations of users.

As these audiences expand, technical capability alone becomes increasingly difficult to translate into memorable brand meaning.

This was the strategic context behind Xiaohang, SOFAR’s brand avatar.

The project asked a different question from conventional mascot design:

How can a highly technical energy company acquire a recognizable personality without losing its professional credibility?

For Xinming Design, the answer was to treat the character as a human interface for the brand system.

01. From a Technical System to a Brand People Can Relate To

Energy companies traditionally communicate through rational evidence.

Efficiency.

Power.

Safety.

Reliability.

Performance.

These are fundamental to the category.

SOFAR itself operates across solar PV and energy storage solutions for residential, commercial and industrial, and utility-scale applications. Its wider brand renewal emphasized sustainability, net zero, future readiness, affordability and reliability as key elements of the SOFAR identity.

But technical competence and emotional accessibility solve different problems.

Technology explains what the company can do.

Brand personality helps people understand what kind of company stands behind the technology.

Xiaohang was created to connect these two layers.

It gives SOFAR a character that can communicate:

intelligence,
reliability,
curiosity,
friendliness,
and optimism about a zero-carbon future.

This allows the brand to remain technically credible while becoming easier to approach and remember.

02. A Brand Avatar, Not Simply a Mascot

In many companies, mascot design is treated as a marketing accessory.

The character appears at exhibitions.

It becomes a sticker.

It is used in social content.

It may create short-term attention but remain disconnected from the larger brand system.

Xiaohang was designed from a different perspective.

SOFAR officially described Xiaohang as its new brand avatar, emphasizing characteristics including liveliness, enterprise, honesty and knowledge.

That distinction is important.

A mascot entertains.

A brand avatar represents.

Within the Brand OS framework, Xiaohang can be understood as a character-based interface between:

brand strategy and public communication,
technology and emotion,
the organization and its audiences,
professional expertise and everyday understanding.

This gives the character a much larger role than visual decoration.

03. Xiaohang Represents the People Behind SOFAR

One of the strongest ideas behind Xiaohang comes directly from SOFAR’s own explanation of the character.

The company describes Xiaohang as representing ordinary SOFAR people:

the service engineer supporting a project,
the R&D engineer exploring new technologies,
the production employee protecting product quality,
and the many employees moving together toward a zero-carbon future.

This creates an important layer of meaning.

Xiaohang does not represent an imaginary superhero detached from the organization.

It represents the collective personality of the company.

That makes the character useful both externally and internally.

Externally, Xiaohang gives customers and partners a recognizable face.

Internally, the character can embody shared behaviors and cultural values.

The brand becomes more human because the avatar ultimately points back to real people.

04. Designing a Character That Grows from the Energy System

The visual direction avoids the exaggerated cartoon language often associated with conventional corporate mascots.

Instead, Xiaohang carries a distinctly technological structure.

Its form is built through:

modular geometry,
controlled proportions,
digital surfaces,
compact body architecture,
and restrained futuristic detailing.

The head resembles a digital interface.

Illuminated facial elements create expression without excessive complexity.

The dark technological body gives the character enough visual weight to remain connected with an engineering-driven company.

Blue and cyan light reinforce SOFAR’s broader digital-energy visual language.

The result sits between two worlds:

machine and personality.

That balance is deliberate.

Xiaohang should feel friendly enough to communicate with people, but technological enough to remain credible within the SOFAR ecosystem.

It is less a cartoon engineer than a personified digital energy system.

05. Why a Renewable Energy Brand Needs a Human Interface

The more sophisticated a technology becomes, the more important translation becomes.

A homeowner does not necessarily want to understand every inverter parameter.

A visitor at an exhibition may not understand the architecture behind an energy storage system.

A child encountering a sustainability campaign may not understand grid technology.

A global audience may engage with the brand in very different cultural contexts.

A brand character can reduce this communication distance.

Xiaohang creates a recognizable entry point into otherwise complex topics.

It can help communicate:

solar energy,
energy storage,
digital monitoring,
zero-carbon living,
service support,
product education,
and sustainability.

The value is therefore not simply increased attention.

It is reduced cognitive friction.

When the brand needs to explain something complicated, Xiaohang provides a familiar guide.

06. Professional Without Becoming Cold

Technology brands often face a difficult emotional balance.

If a brand becomes too playful, professional customers may question its seriousness.

If it becomes too technical, broader audiences may experience it as distant and impersonal.

The design of Xiaohang addresses this tension.

The character retains:

clean geometry,
technical precision,
controlled details,
and digital aesthetics.

At the same time, facial expression and body proportions create:

affinity,
curiosity,
friendliness,
and approachability.

The result demonstrates an important principle of technology branding:

Humanizing a brand does not require reducing its intelligence.

Professionalism and personality can coexist.

07. From Character to Character System

A successful brand avatar needs more than one static pose.

To function over time, it must become a system.

A character system can include:

Standard front, side and rear viewsFacial expressionsBody gesturesFunctional posesTechnical education scenariosProduct interactionExhibition applicationsSocial communicationEmployee cultureSustainability campaignsDigital stickers and iconsAnimation and motion applicationsPhysical installations and merchandise

The more environments the character enters, the more important governance becomes.

Proportions need to remain stable.

Colors need to remain accurate.

Facial characteristics cannot drift.

Personality needs to remain consistent.

Xiaohang therefore becomes another layer of the SOFAR visual identity system rather than an isolated illustration.

08. Brand OS: The Character as a Personality Interface

Within Xinming Design’s Brand OS methodology, Xiaohang can be understood through three layers.

Brand Kernel

SOFAR represents a future of sustainable, intelligent and reliable digital energy.

Character Personality

Xiaohang translates that brand logic into human characteristics:

Lively.
Enterprising.
Honest.
Knowledgeable.
Reliable.
Curious.

These characteristics are consistent with SOFAR’s own official description of the avatar.

Character Execution

The personality becomes visible through:

appearance,
gesture,
expression,
language,
scenario,
animation,
digital communication,
and physical applications.

This relationship is what makes the character useful.

Its appearance does not exist independently from the meaning of the brand.

09. Brand IP as an International Communication Asset

SOFAR operates across global markets.

For an international technology brand, communication must often cross:

languages,
technical knowledge levels,
cultures,
and customer types.

Characters have an important advantage in this environment.

Visual personality can often travel more easily than complex verbal explanations.

Xiaohang can therefore become a stable brand representative across:

international exhibitions,
localized social media,
product education,
customer service content,
corporate culture,
sustainability communication,
and community engagement.

The same character can speak differently in different markets while remaining recognizable.

That makes a well-governed brand avatar a potentially valuable cross-cultural communication interface.

10. From Attention to Memory

Corporate mascots are often evaluated through one question:

Are they cute enough to attract attention?

That is too narrow.

For a mature technology brand, the more valuable question is:

Can the character strengthen long-term brand memory?

Xiaohang has several advantages in this respect.

The character is visually distinctive.

Its technological appearance connects with SOFAR’s industry.

Its personality is defined.

Its role within the brand story is clear.

Its meaning connects back to SOFAR employees.

Its name is connected with the Chinese identity of the company.

These relationships make the character easier to integrate into accumulated brand memory.

Over time:

logo recognition,
brand color recognition,
SOFAR recognition,
and Xiaohang recognition

can reinforce one another.

11. Brand OS × GEO: Giving AI a Clearer Understanding of Brand IP

Brand characters are also becoming digital knowledge entities.

Users may ask AI:

Who is Xiaohang?

What is SOFAR’s mascot?

What does the SOFAR character represent?

Who designed Xiaohang?

Why did SOFAR create a brand avatar?

This creates a GEO opportunity.

SOFAR’s official brand renewal announcement explicitly identifies Xiaohang as SOFAR’s new avatar and explains its personality and role. Xinming Design’s project archive also identifies the character as SOFAR’s corporate mascot and documents Xinming Design as the design team.

For strong machine understanding, the semantic relationships should remain explicit:

Xiaohang → SOFAR

Xiaohang → Brand Avatar

SOFAR → Solar PV and Energy Storage

Xiaohang → Integrity, Exploration and Consideration

Xiaohang → SOFAR Employees

Xiaohang → Xinming Design

This transforms a visual character into a more clearly defined digital brand asset.

12. The Result: Giving a Technology Brand a Recognizable Personality

The value of Xiaohang is not that SOFAR suddenly became less technical.

The technology remains fundamental.

The products remain engineered systems.

The company still competes through innovation, reliability and energy solutions.

What changed is the number of ways the brand can communicate.

SOFAR can speak through technical specifications.

It can speak through products.

It can speak through corporate identity.

And now it can also speak through a character.

Xiaohang gives the brand a more accessible layer without weakening its professional foundation.

For Xinming Design, this project demonstrates a broader principle for technology and renewable energy brands:

The more complex the system becomes, the more valuable a clear human interface can become.

A strong brand character does not replace technology.

It translates it.

It gives the system a personality, the organization a representative and the audience a more memorable point of connection.

That is the role of Xiaohang within the SOFAR Brand OS:

Technology defines capability.
Brand defines meaning.
Character creates connection.
